Pride, Visa and the Olympics

I had a fabulous day at the Olympic Games this week. Personally, I don’t like the fact that McDonalds and Coca Cola are major sponsors of a sporting event when their businesses are all about pushing sugary, fatty processed foods and drinks. However, the most curious sign, splashed all over the shops and concessions was “We are proud only to accept Visa”.

What is there to be proud of, in restricting customers’ choices like that? Did Visa really think that, by making it really difficult to pay by any other method (other than cash) they would sign up a new swathe of eager customers?

I am sure that, had they said that customers can use American Express, MasterCard or Visa, but if you use Visa you can get a gift, a chance to win something or a discount, they would have ended up with far more good will.

Make it fun to be a customer. Don’t take customers for granted. Thank customers for their business.

I am not proud that I could only use my Visa card. In fact, Visa has gone down in my estimation.
